Centre Supports Tourism Projects In Uttar Pradesh And NCR
The Union Ministry of Tourism has extended financial assistance for multiple tourism infrastructure projects in Uttar Pradesh and the National Capital Region (NCR) under its flagship schemes, including PRASHAD, Swadesh Darshan, Swadesh Darshan 2.0, and the Challenge Based Destination Development (CBDD) programme.
Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Monday said in a written reply to Lok Sabha that these central schemes are designed to complement the efforts of state governments and Union Territory administrations in developing tourism-related infrastructure across the country.
Under the PRASHAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual, Heritage Augmentation Drive) scheme, several projects have been sanctioned in Uttar Pradesh since 2014-15. These include the development of Varanasi (Phase I and II), Mathura-Vrindavan as a mega tourist circuit, river cruise tourism on the Ganga in Varanasi, construction of a tourist facilitation centre in Vrindavan, and infrastructure development at Govardhan.
The Ministry also sanctioned a series of projects in Uttar Pradesh under the Swadesh Darshan scheme across thematic circuits such as Buddhist, Ramayana, Spiritual and Heritage Circuits. Key projects include the development of Sravasti, Kushinagar and Kapilvastu under the Buddhist Circuit; Chitrakoot and Shringverpur and Ayodhya under the Ramayana Circuit; and multiple districts across the state under the Spiritual Circuit. A Heritage Circuit project covering sites such as Kalinjar Fort, Maghar Dham and Chauri Chaura was also supported.
Further, under Swadesh Darshan 2.0, experience-based tourism projects were approved at Naimisaranya, focusing on a Vedic wellness experience, and in Prayagraj, including the Azad Park and ‘Dekho Prayagraj’ trail experience.
The Ministry has also sanctioned a project under the Challenge Based Destination Development (CBDD) scheme for the development of the cultural landscape at Mahoba during 2024–25, aimed at promoting culture and heritage tourism.
The Minister clarified that no proposal is currently under consideration for the development of the historic Dudheshwar Nath Temple in Ghaziabad. However, he added that the Ministry continues to receive proposals from states and Union Territories on an ongoing basis, which are examined as per prescribed guidelines and subject to the availability of funds.
The Tourism Ministry also undertakes nationwide promotional activities to showcase Indian tourism destinations, including Buddhist sites, through events, digital platforms, social media, fairs and festivals.
Tourism projects under these schemes are implemented by the respective state governments and Union Territory administrations, while the Tourism Ministry monitors progress and encourages timely completion.
